Final drive or travel motor? Tell them apart before you buy
They bolt together and they fail in ways that look alike. The symptoms point in different directions if you know what separates them.

On a tracked machine these two sit against each other, and when one side stops behaving, both are suspects. Replacing the wrong one is an expensive way to learn which it was.
The symptoms do separate, though, once you know what each part actually does.
What each one does
The travel motor is hydraulic. It turns pressure and flow into rotation. The final drive is mechanical. It is a gearbox that takes that rotation, reduces its speed, multiplies its torque, and delivers it to the sprocket.
That split is the whole diagnostic. Mechanical failures sound and feel mechanical. Hydraulic failures follow pressure, flow and temperature.
Symptoms that lean mechanical
- Noise that rises and falls with track speed rather than with engine load
- Grinding or knocking that is present even when the machine is barely moving
- Metal particles in the gear oil, or oil that comes out grey and thick
- Oil weeping from the hub or from the seal behind the sprocket
- Play in the sprocket when the machine is off
Those point at the gearbox. Gears and bearings announce themselves.
Symptoms that lean hydraulic
- The machine tracks to one side even with both levers even
- Loss of power that appears under load and disappears when unloaded
- The weak side stays quiet, it just does not push
- Behaviour that changes as the hydraulic oil warms up
- Both sides degrade together, which points upstream of either motor
That last one matters. When both tracks weaken at once, the problem is usually not in either travel motor. Look further up the circuit.
The check that saves a part
Draining and inspecting the gear oil in the final drive is the single most informative thing you can do, and it costs almost nothing. Clean oil at the correct level argues against a failing gearbox. Metal in the oil settles the question in the other direction.
A technician can also compare both sides directly, since a machine carries two of everything. A side by side comparison under the same conditions turns a vague feeling into an observation.
Before you order
Whichever way it points, send the machine model, the serial, and which side you are working on. Final drives and travel motors are frequently side specific, and the serial resolves the revision.
If the diagnosis is still open, say so. It is cheaper to talk it through first than to ship the wrong assembly across a border.
