Undercarriage: what to check before it becomes a bigger job
Undercarriage wear is gradual until it is not. What you can see from the ground, and why replacing one component at a time rarely works.

Undercarriage is one of the largest running costs on a tracked machine, and it is the one that degrades most quietly. Nothing breaks. Everything just wears, until a component reaches the point where it starts damaging the ones next to it.
Look before you measure
A walk around tells you more than most operators expect:
- Bright, polished wear surfaces where there used to be a defined profile
- Sprocket teeth that have gone from symmetrical to hooked
- Rollers with oil tracks running down from the seal
- Pads that are cracked, bent, or missing bolts
- An idler that no longer sits square to the frame
None of that requires a tool. All of it changes what you should order.
Track tension drives everything else
Tension is the setting most often left alone and the one with the widest effect. Too tight and every pin, bushing, roller and sprocket tooth carries load it was not meant to carry, all day. Too loose and the chain can climb or jump the sprocket, which turns a wear problem into a stoppage.
Check the manufacturer specification for your machine and set it there. The correct figure depends on the model, so it is not something to copy from another machine on the same site.
Conditions set the pace
Two identical machines wear at completely different rates depending on where they work. Rock is harder on an undercarriage than sand. Constant slopes load one side more than the other. Counter rotating to turn, rather than steering in an arc, grinds the system against itself.
That is why hours alone are a poor predictor. Inspection beats a calendar.
Replace as a system, not as one part
This is the expensive lesson. A worn sprocket meshing with a new chain will damage the new chain, and faster than it damaged the old one, because the profiles no longer match. The same logic applies to rollers running on a stretched chain.
When one component is at the end of its life, check what it has been running against before ordering just that one. Sometimes the answer really is a single roller. Often it is not.
What we need to quote it
Send the machine model and serial, which components you are looking at, and photos of the current wear. Undercarriage parts vary across revisions of the same model, and the serial is what settles it.
